Most 💜 back in the days + timeline
These songs are grey/missing at Spotify. The url of this page is above every 'bitd' Spotify list. I'm Dutch; grey songs will be different in other parts of the world.

In the past these songs belonged to my biggest favorites. To give some context to those lists, there's also a personal musical timeline added; background information, pics, sounds.

→ About C & C Music Factory - Keep it comin': The (slightly longer) 'C&C Club Mix' is played even more than the radio version, which is in the list. The versions have a similar feel, though. The C&C Club Mix just feels more complete.

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds/video):

Early 1990 I started listening to my dad's records/cds, and also to the Dutch children act 'Kinderen Voor Kinderen' (late 1990 I got their brand new, 11th album). Halfway 1991 I started listening to contempory non-children music; back in the days mainly dance. Listening to the radio happened a lot, preferring the broadcasting company 'Veronica' at the Dutch public youth station 'Radio 3'. This was the schedule, and there's more about that station here (early 1992) and here (renewed 1993 version, here's a commercial). Veronica was the broadcaster of the Dutch Top 40 and the quite famous show 'Rinkeldekinkel'. Also loved: Tros Dance Trax, Veronica's 'Rave Radio' and Avro's dance/house show 'For Those Who Like To Groove'. I also wanted to try youth stations like Power FM and Radio 538, but I couldn't receive them. Home taping and borrowing compilation cds at the local library also happened a lot; House Party, Turn Up The Bass, Move The House, Now Dance, Techno Trance, the first Mega Dance cds, etcetera. I read teen magazines like Hitkrant, often writing about music. And I was a huge 2 Unlimited fan; there were only two singles needed for that. No limit was a youth classic, the album also. And every week I went to the record store to get the newest Top 40/Mega Top 50 chart paper (they were free).

Old versus recent music: Very focused on recent releases, although some pre mid 1991 songs were also played; mostly danceable and released since +/- 1987. For example: Technotronic's Pump up the jam, C&C Music Factory's Gonna make you sweat, and Snap!'s The power were delayed joy.

→ The sound/video files in the text above: Radio 3 commercial (spring 1993), Dutch Top 40 (February 1992), Rinkeldekinkel (January 1993), Tros Dance Trax (1992), Rave Radio (March 1993), For Those Who Like To Groove (September 1992), compilation cd commercials (1992/1993, partly video), and 2 Unlimited as guests at Radio 3 (May 1993).

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds/video):

This was a long and steady era, mostly filled with happy-go-lucky music and still filled with home taping, completed with selfmade cover art. This is the sound compilation of that tape from spring 2000, with the transitions and jingles. Here's the (ballpoint) cover of a slightly older tape. Besides home taping I still borrowed compilation cds at the local libary (and sometimes bought them): Now Dance Hits, Mega Dance, 538 Dance Smash Hits, Yabba Dabba Dance and Club Trance. Mega Music Dance Experience 1995 was another much played compilation. Radiowise I listened to Radio 538, Radio 3 FM (mainly because Radio 538 often was hard to receive), local pirate stations playing a lot of dance music, and in 1997/1998 the local (mainly) dance station Radio Atlantis/Channel X (sound files). Late in the era also Power 105.4, a young and danceable format presented by the local Dutch radio organisation Avulo FM. And I frequently taped songs from the chart 'Hit 50' at Studio Brussel. Often it was typical Belgian mainstream dance, although it isn't in the fragment (it's found at YT, not made by me). TMF, the main Dutch music video station, was also important. I still read a lot of teen magazines (Hitkrant, Popfoto/Fancy), partly about music. In the first part of the era I was still a 2 Unlimited fan, although I've always preferred the first two albums over Real things. In 1999/2000 Basement Jaxx - Remedy was a much played artist album, besides all those compilations. In hindsight it feels like a preview of the next era.

Old versus recent music: Very focused on recent releases, although there was also older music played; mostly danceable and released since +/- 1987. In 1994 I had this compilation.

→ The sound/video files in the text above: Radio 3 FM (commmercial, mid/late 90s), Tape compilation (March/April 2000), Atlantis/Channel X (jingles, used in 1997/1998), and the 'Hit 50' at Studio Brussel (spring 1999).
[Link to Spotify list] 2000-2004, MOST 💜 BACK IN THE DAYS (19-23 YEARS OLD):

  • Spiller - Cry baby

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds):

+/- September 2000 internet became highly influential. My musical taste changed - still mostly dance, but more grown-up. It all started with discovering internet radio. 'Dancenet', later called DanceRadioOne was the very first one. Here are fragments. Important early tracks discovered there: Daft Punk - One more time, Etienne de Crecy - Am I wrong, David Morales - Needin' you (vocal version). Besides that, I discovered discussion boards (very serious talk about music there), uploaded my first website, started downloading (and burning cds), etcetera. Because of increasingly expensive phone bills, broadband internet was installed early 2001. Besides Dancenet I listened to Pro FM (accessible dance, disco and Italo), and also to the regular FM stations Id&T Radio (also dance, here are fragments) and 3FM. Sadly there was only one place to listen to internet radio: the computer in the living room. And Hed Kandi has also to be mentioned, both the music and the artwork. These were two of my music sites, created in 2003/2004. But there were a lot more designs, often already replaced after some weeks.

Old versus recent music: Very focused on recent releases, the era I was most intensively following them - even a bit too much. Although there was also older music played; mostly danceable and released since +/- 1987. Now also a bit more grown-up, similar to the recent part. These are selfmade compilations.

→ The sound files in the text above: Fragments of Dancenet/DanceRadioOne (2002/2003), jingles of Id&T Radio (+/- 2003).
[Link to Spotify list] 2005-2007, MOST 💜 BACK IN THE DAYS (23-26 YEARS OLD):

Songs of 2005-2007, back then big favorites, and all quite recent at the moment of discovering them.

→ These are missing on Spotify/are grey. I wanted to add them to the list under the link (somewhere in the purple coloured section):

  • Bodyrox - Yeah yeah --- Turbo House Mix
  • Dj Sneak - Inside --- Wink’s Acid Will Guide Us
  • Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts - Les gans
  • Julien Jabre, Bibi, MC Mellow Dee - And you don't stop --- True School
  • Keith Thompson - I live for now --- David Vendetta
  • Recloose - Mana's bounce
  • Single Minded Pros - Wanting people to listen

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds):

This was a messy bridge era between my 'core' dance years and the eras after this. I was figuring things out, started playing a lot more not-so-danceable music + old(er) music; the floodgates opened when it comes to that. I didn't really have a clue, but in general my taste became more subtle. Despite exploring +/- 1001 genres, the French dance station Underground FG (discovered at the tail end of 2004 and playing minimal, deephouse, electro, techhouse, etcetera) was very influential, with it's - again - relatively subtle feel. It alternated dj mix and playlist hours. This was the website, late 2005. And listening to internet radio increased a lot in general: Studio Brussel, Kx Radio (like the current station Ice Radio, but with more famous djs), Pro FM, Radio 0511 (60s and 70s music), Laurent Garnier's station PBB, Cryosleep (ambient), various Soma FM stations, KIF (groovy house, here's a fragment) and some others. In 2005 I bought a FM transmitter to spread the sound through home. It was primitive but very helpful. Id'ing tracks often was difficult though. I made less and less use of mainstream sources, but apps like Shazam weren't there yet. And publishing playlists was less common for radio stations. Ways to id tracks, with mixed results: Uploading a snipped to YT (sometimes the title appeared), putting a snippet on a French discussion board (I didn't speak French), etc. I didn't play a lot of artist albums, but Pete Philly & Perquisite's 'Mindstate' was an influential one, with its relaxed feel. This was my music site, late 2006.

Old versus recent music: I was less busy following recent releases (I still burned and bought cds containing recent tracks though), and played much older music; like said above. And 'older' changed into 'many decades ago' instead of 'mostly since +/- 1987'. This was also the era of collecting ultra cheap second hand cds of the late 80s + 90s though, in the past often borrowed at the library. The entire Turn Up The Bass series and others.

→ The sound files in the text above: 55 minutes of Underground FG (December 2004 or January 2005), Pro FM jingles, KIF jingles.
[Link to Spotify list] 2008-2014, MOST 💜 BACK IN THE DAYS (26-33 YEARS OLD):

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds):

Compared to the previous era it was more clear what I liked. Everything started to fall into place. And soundwise it was the softest era. In the early part of the era I discovered sources like FIP (late 00s bumper), LDBK Radio (soundfiles), Lefto (2008 fragments of 'De Hop' at Studio Brussel), Nova, etcetera. At the tail end of 2007 I already discovered some jazz influenced stuff, shortly after that I discovered Lefto's Studio Brussel show. Besides recent music lots of old(er) tracks were discovered, like in the previous era; containing a lot more guitars than the recent ones played. In the first part of this era I also installed wifi and bought my first standalone internet radio. Besides the stations mentioned before Radionomy was important, home of lots of hobbyist stations. I also operated stations by myself, with selfmade jingles; you can listen to some hours here. Studio Brussel, some 'Addicted To Radio' stations, Only1 Revival and Paris1Reverse (minimal/techno/deephouse) also have to be mentioned. Another source used a lot, especially in the latter part of the era: 22Tracks. Spotify already existed but wasn't dominant yet. Burning cds happened less + more messy. Summer 2008 I pulled the plug from the since early 2002 created series, containing my favorite recent songs. These were some of my music sites in 2008-2012.

Old versus recent music: The most blurry era when it comes to enjoying recent versus old tracks. The recent ones (extra) often were found by accident. Especially in the latter part of 2008 + 2009; health issues caused extra nonchalance. Here are two cds of this era containing recent music though, a burned one (very late) and a bought one (also very late). Older tracks - I still discovered lots of them - could be months, years or decades old.

→ The sound files in the text above: FIP bumper (2009), fragments of Laid Back Radio (+/- 2013), fragments of Lefto's De Hop at Studio Brussel (spring 2008), some hours of my own radio (early/mid 10s), and 42 minutes of Only1 Revival (2011 or 2012).
[Link to Spotify list] 2015-2019, MOST 💜 BACK IN THE DAYS (33-38 YEARS OLD):

Songs of 2015-2019, back then big favorites, and all quite recent at the moment of discovering them.

→ These are missing on Spotify/are grey. I wanted to add them to the list under the link (somewhere in the purple coloured section):

  • Kaytranada - A losers celebration
  • OLVO - Jimmy
  • Stro Elliott - Marvin's mood
  • Theo Spazzatura - Trockenpflaume

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds):

In the mid 10s my musical taste became a bit darker. Since that era it has changed little to nothing. Listening to music migrated to Spotify and usb sticks, and smartphones became more and more important. I also started listening to Mixcloud, music podcasts, etcetera. And also to talk radio/talk podcasts. Some important internet radio stations in this era, partly not existing anymore (*): Ice Radio, Poko Pokito* (soft alternative music), Ersatz Radio* (old alternative music), BBC 6 Music, Couleur3, Radio Béton (sound file, 2018), Studio Brussel (still the show by Lefto), Mondobongo Radio, still FIP and Nova (2017, 2018), and BRUZZ. This one was/is especially interesting at night; +/- 2017 for example Chunks Of Funk by Mr. Leenknecht. You can also listen to it. This was my music site in 2015/2016. The design was inspired by early 90s Top 40 papers. There have been a couple of music sites after that, but the last ones felt a bit dead. This one of 2017 was on the edge, the one after that even isn't worth publicing again. In 2019 I pulled the plug.

Old versus recent music: Compared to the previous two eras listening to contemporary music played a bigger role, besides still discovering lots of oldies; months, years or decades old.

→ The sound files in the text above: Klap van de Molen podcast (May 2018), Radio Béton (2018), Lefto at Studio Brussel (spring 2016), and Mr Leenknecht at Bruzz (summer 2016).
2020-NOW (38-44 YEARS OLD), NO SPOTIFY LIST YET:

I haven't created a Spotify list of the most played tracks since 2020 yet (quite recent when discovering them). Recent favorites are already highlighted somewhere else at the Spotify account. But I've added an extra part to the textual timeline.

Timeline (there are links to pics and sounds):

Tastewise there's nearly no difference between 2015 and now. The general mood is rippling. The role of Spotify became a lot bigger, although ethically there's much to say about it. Here are soms old icons used at my Spotify account. I'm also still listening a lot to internet radio. Stations played here, since 2020: FIP (a classic now), Radio Béton (sound files), KEXP, BBC 6 Music, (the evening shows at) BRUZZ, Couleur3, Ice Radio, RTBF Jam, Urgent FM, Byte FM, Raptz, KLFM, Radio Scorpio, Les Inrocks, L'Oreille Qui Gratte, Ness Radio, PBB, Pinguin Radio, La Run, Start FM, and other ones similar to stations mentioned before. Yes, I'm changing channels a lot. French stations are often part of the 'Ferarock' or 'Radio Campus' network. I also still listen to Mixcloud streams/music podcasts/etcetera. And also to talk radio/talk podcasts, nowadays often played with the 'Pocket Casts' app. In the end I highly prefer handcrafted playlists (not by Spotify, but by regular people), and musical databases filled by humans. I neglect the algorythmic parts of Spotify. Playing something extra at the end of a handcrafted playlist is o.k., but it doesn't go further than that. When it comes to personal music sites, there was nothing from 2019 till early 2025. The only things visible for others were some plain txt-files containing the 'missing at Spotify' tracks. The urls were on top of the playlists. But in the spring of 2025 I've changed that into a kind of site; the one you're looking at now.

Old versus recent music: The same as the previous era.

→ The sound files in the text above: Radio Béton (2022), Talk show 'Gaan!' at NPO Radio 1, about AI (2020).
